Senior actuaries (Managers) and actuaries (Consultants)

Melbourne - Full time

About the business

We help business and government leaders see a clear way forward. Taylor Fry’s actuarial and analytics consultants support our clients in making strategic decisions to enhance the financial health of their organisations, and benefit communities, people and society.

We’re creative problem solvers – including physicists, engineers, mathematicians, data scientists and actuaries. This variety strengthens our advice to meet the needs of our clients and their customers.

Our innovations have led to changes in government policy in Australia and New Zealand, and continue to break new ground, particularly in the social sector. Qantas liked our approaches in analytics so much, it bought a 51 per cent stake in our business in 2015.

About the opportunity

Taylor Fry’s business is growing, and we’re committed to investing in this growth, particularly in Melbourne. The strategic growth of Melbourne will see us expand from our general insurance and injury schemes businesses to work with social sector clients and a wider range of advanced analytics projects.

Our Melbourne office offers the advantages of a small, engaged team, and the more expansive connection and collaboration with our Sydney and Wellington offices to ensure a variety of work and career development opportunities.  Our workplace offers a flexible and collaborative environment, where your individual contribution is valued. You’ll have the opportunity to make your own mark, with your career development supported and nurtured by your colleagues and the business.

About the Manager roles

We’re looking for senior actuaries with capabilities in insurance, injury schemes, health and analytics. Ideally, you specialise in one of these areas or have generalist experience.

As a senior member of the business and Melbourne office, you’ll work closely with the Principals and Directors internally, and proactively participate in business development, establishing your own network with current and new clients.

Our Managers:

  • Lead and actively contribute to client projects and sub-projects
  • Contribute to tender processes
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities with established and new clients
  • Write articles to raise the Taylor Fry profile and their own
  • Mentor and coach our consultants and other employees in their area of experience or on client needs
  • Build strong relationships at peer and more senior levels in client businesses.

About you

You enjoy being part of and contributing to a supportive working environment, recognising the value each person brings. A creative thinker with a keen commercial sense, you’ll have at least five years’ experience working in an analytics-focused or traditional actuarial consulting role in the corporate or social sectors.

You’ll bring the following skills and attributes:

  • Deep understanding of predictive modelling, statistics and/or machine learning and scripting languages such as SAS, R, Python and other relevant languages
  • Ability to interpret and analyse complex technical data, with high attention to detail
  • Experience leading projects or streams of work
  • Experience leading people, and enthusiasm for sharing your knowledge and training team members
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to assimilate information quickly and handle multiple priorities under pressure or within tight timeframes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to liaise with clients and diverse stakeholder audiences
  • Ability to focus on the client and take the time to form deep client relationships, listen to client needs, and provide advice and solutions that meet their objectives
  • A passion for making a difference using data.

About the Consultant roles

We’re looking for actuaries with a focus on continual development and improvement.  As a member of the business and Melbourne office, you’ll work closely with the Principals and Directors internally, and proactively participate in a variety of client projects.

Our Consultants:

  • Actively contribute to client projects and sub-projects
  • Contribute to tender processes
  • Build relationships at peer and more senior levels in client businesses
  • Rotate through each of our business streams for broad experience and career development
  • May be completing their actuarial studies with the Actuaries Institute.

About you

You enjoy being part of and contributing to a supportive working environment, sharing knowledge and learning from a diverse group of people to build your career. You’ll have strong aptitude and potentially one to three years’ experience in an analytics-focused or traditional actuarial role.

You’ll bring the following skills and attributes:

  • Excellent academic results throughout your degree in a quantitative discipline (i.e., mathematics, physics, engineering or actuarial studies)
  • The ability to think critically, pragmatically or creatively as needed
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, and the ability to build working relationships.

About our culture

Our business was established so that staff would be encouraged and rewarded for being collaborative. We nurture our employees’ interests and support their growth and development. We’re known for doing great work, for our innovation and our thought leadership. Our people particularly love immersing themselves in the technical detail, which they can explore beyond day-to-day client projects by rotating in and out of research roles in our own research and development arm, TF labs.

We take an active interest in our people and their careers, and promote work practices that support wellbeing, mental wellness and work/life balance. The range of benefits we offer include flexible work hours, remote working, paid parental leave, bonuses based on profit share, as well as social activities to suit your style.
